Engaging Minds, Transforming Lives

Chinese

More people speak Chinese than any other language on the planet. With its robust history and its vitally relevant presence in our global society, Chinese is a language filled with both practical applications and the possibility of discovery.

Southwestern offers courses in Chinese that build foundational language and communication skills for students with personal or professional career aspirations or goals of graduate study.

Students in the Chinese Program can take Beginning and Intermediate Chinese, as well as smaller, more focused classes at the Advanced level. The Chinese Program also offers classes on Chinese culture, which complement other areas of the Southwestern curriculum.

Students can minor in Chinese and are encouraged to pair an International Studies major with significant Chinese language study. The Chinese Program’s building of diverse perspectives extends to course materials tailored to specific needs, including multimedia in the Language Learning Center. Some undergraduates are teaching in local schools.

Chinese language and culture uniquely prepares students for committed engagement and study. The language’s complex structure and rich visual components make it an ideal area for those students who wish to both challenge themselves and create a practical, globally relevant skill set.
