from November 16th to December 2nd, 1-5pm in the Fine Arts Gallery, located in the Sarofim
Fine Arts Building. This visual treat is not to be missed.

Crone’s exhibit consists primarily of oil paintings, but also features two wood prints and apainted metal sculpture. The woodprints, “Hodgepodge Heads” and “Hodgepodge Hands”, feature gorgeously rendered heads, hands, and feet.

Crone states, “The prints are representational depictions of portraiture using the hands, feet or heads of people as “signifiers” to represent their identities.”The prints are larger than life, and standing before them is an experience.

The paintings are larger than life as well, and explosively colorful.

Several paintings are, “abstract “portraits” of people signified by the patterns in the clothes they wear” Crone said.

This is a unique and fascinating way to see people, and will make the viewer wish theyknew the personalities who inspired these brilliant depictions.

The other paintings are, “derived from original family photos” Crone said.

Not only are these slices of memory for Crone, they hold deep emotional meaning.

The brush marks, the careful attention to the mixing of the paint, and the way I move the
paint around the canvas coalesce to simulate the deep love and bonds of adoption” she said.

It is a testament to Crone’s talent that not only are the paintings initially visually stunning
and fun to look at, they seem to shift on the canvas depending on perspective.

“Mom” and “Dad,” are primary examples. Up close they are beautiful patchwork patterns, but upon
looking at them from across the room a pattern of ties hanging in a closet emerges in “Dad” and
shapes of dresses emerge in “Mom.”

The same holds true for all of them. Krone’s use of paint and mixed media such as glitter and sequins invites a closer look, and the viewer will have to resist the urge to reach out and touch the raised whorls of paint rising from the surface.

Throughout the exhibit, Krone’s presence is strong and her style unique. It holds a strong sense of nostalgia. Threads of Time flies in the face of the idea that abstract art cannot express specific and significant ideas, and is sure to stun.

At the beginning of his talk, guest speaker Eli Clare remarked that he would be speaking about a grim piece of history. Eli’s lecture, titled “Yearning Towards Carrie Buck,” was the story of Carrie Buck, a poor white woman who was sentenced to forced sterilization in 1927 on the count of being “feeble-minded”.

Curtesy Google Images.

The infamous court case, “Buck v. Bell”, made involuntary sterilization laws constitutional. This lecture, sponsored by the Feminist Studies department, was held on Nov. 15.

“I thought it was a very heavy topic,” junior Kristi Lenderman said. “I think it really connected with disability and ability problems, and the intersection of class, race and how those issues from the 1920s are here today.”

Clare explained how the court case came about, under the guise of the “science” of eugenics, which declared that poverty, crime, immigration and other issues were all moral issues. More importantly, these moral issues came down to heredity. Carrie’s story wasn’t told like a court case or science briefing, however, but melded poetry, history, and images to create a living and breathing story of Carrie’s life.

“As a poet, Eli is especially attentive to words — the way they sound, the way they move around in our mouths, the way they make us think. As a writer and performer, he asks us to slow down and think about the words we are using and why,” feminist studies professor Dr. Alison Kafer said.

The term eugenics was coined in 1895 in England, and migrated to the United States where the process was expanded and developed. Essentially, eugenics desires to improve the genetic condition of a population, usually in reference to human populations. Eventually the concept of eugenics went to post-war Germany and inspired the Nazi Party, who took the ideas to cruel action.

Senior Eli Sreniawski commented that she had learned about Carrie Buck in her Gender and Science class, about Eli Clare in Feminist Disability Studies, and about eugenics in several of her classes.

“It’s cool to pull together topics outside of class,” Sreniawski said. “That’s what a liberal arts education is all about.”

Most people have never heard Carrie’s story, and how the concept of eugenics relates to the modern day. At the time, eugenics was seen as a science that melded with social policy, and certainly was not considered “fringe” at many times in history. It’s a subject and a history that comes up in many classes at Southwestern.

“One of the things I most appreciate about Eli’s work is his insistence on cross-movement analysis. He makes clear that conversations about disability are also always conversations about class, about race, about sexuality, about gender, about environmentalism,” Dr. Kafer said. “As a result, his book “Exile and Pride” works as well in my Ecofeminists and Queer Greens class as it does in my Feminist Disability Studies and Intro to Feminist Studies classes.”

Clare also mentioned the surprising statistic that in the United States, 90% of fetuses thought to have Down syndrome are aborted. Regardless of one’s opinion on abortion, Eli emphasized how the art of storytelling helps us remember great and terrible things and how issues from decades past come up event today.

“Knowing and learning history is an important part of learning now,” Clare said.

Southwestern has its very own movie channel, channel 44, dedicated to showing a varietyof different movies every month.

The movies are a mix of new releases and seasonally appropriate films.

Around Halloween, there were more horror movies on the roster, while for the rest of this year they’ll lean towards a more festive theme.

Movies run every three hours beginning at 9 a.m., with the last showing of the daystarting at midnight. In between movies the channel displays a list of the movies currently on rotation, as well as the movies coming next week. You can also find out which movies are showing, as well as their individual show times, at my.southwestern.edu under thecommunity tab.

This week’s movies are “Green Lantern”, “Apollo 13”, and “Planes,Trains, and Automobiles”. If you have a movie that you would like to see on the SU Movie Channel, you can contact Jason Chapman, assistant director of student activities. However, it is important to keep in mind that the movies are ordered two months in advance, so be ready to wait if you want to see your favorite film on the channel.

Dave Eggers’ recent visit to Southwestern for the annual Writer’s Voice provided a night of storytelling and inspiration to the importance of how we communicate with one another. Eggers’ presentation addressed an interest that many in the Southwestern community hold in writing and education. Throughout the night he discussed how to deal with adversity in the face of strange and surprising obstacles, such as the governing city ordinance that accompanied the founding of Dave Eggers’ entrepreneurial effort, 826 Valencia.

Innovative and humorous solutions provided the solution for 826 Valencia, a tutoring center with a pirate supply storefront located in the Mission District in San Francisco. Eggers focused on the amazing feats that can be accomplished with hard work and a little creativity. His visit has inspired interest in projects similar to his tutoring center.

As a local project of a similar nature, Austin Bat Cave offers several programs and projects, such as tutoring and workshops, for the local Austin community. ABC will be launching their official storefront starting next year.

ABC hopes to provide opportunities for youth between the ages of six and eighteen to develop their skills in creative and expository writing. They have also been named in the Best of Austin 2010 as the “Best Place to Develop Creativity”. Southwestern students may have interest in volunteering with Austin Bat Cave, which currently provides three main types of opportunities: creative writing workshops, online opportunities and local events.

Every other month, ABC offers creative writing workshops at three Austin schools: Anderson High School, Kealing Middle School and UT Elementary School. Workshops range from more serious topics like SAT prep, to more creative and exploratory topics like playwriting and hip hop poetry. These workshops last from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the age group, and the volunteer day is no more than 90 minutes at Kealing and UT, and four hours at Anderson. Volunteers are needed to help with the workshops and to help the instructors. These workshops build around a theme (i.e. description, point of view) and stand alone in a creative framework.

If volunteers aren’t able to make it to the on-site volunteering opportunities, online opportunities will begin in January through both Austin and Anderson High School. This one-on-one mentorship opportunity is flexible for the volunteer, and volunteers are matched with AVID students who are working on college application essays.

In addition, ABC also offers monthly or seasonal event opportunities. One example is the monthly fundraiser called “The Story Department” where artsy adult (21 and up) Austinites come together to tell stories based on a given theme for the month. Volunteers are needed to set up the event, manage money, and break down the event.

Austin Bat Cave works to support public school teachers in their drive to accomplish tasks that would be impossible alone. For more information about volunteering, ABC can be reached at volunteer@austinbatcave.org.

Mask & Wig is an auxiliary theater organization comprised of about 20 students. The group does a variety of theater related things around campus.

“Particularly this year, we’ve been trying to get more involved on campus,” Longoria said.

Mask & Wig sells concessions at official theater productions, with all proceeds going straight back to the organization.

“We primarily fund capstones and individual theater projects. For example, I’m directinga black box play next semester and Mask & Wig is supporting me,” Longoria said.

Since last year, Mask & Wig has held an annual bake sale for Broadway Cares, an organization dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. This year, the bake sale will be Nov. 30and Dec. 1 in the Bishops Lounge. Between 10-20% of the proceeds will be donated.

In the spring semester, Mask & Wig hopes to do a miscast concert.

“It will be like a gender swap, cabaret night,” President Abraham Ramirez said.

The group also puts on a spur of the moment event several times a semester called Lunch Box.

“We get together and have lunch in the black box. People workshop different projects they are working on and it’s open to everyone,” Longoria said.

These events give students additional help crafting their performance skills.

“The last time I went to Lunch Box it was a blast. Mask & Wig is the bomb,” junior Robert Frost said.

The volleyball team finished out its season at the NCAA tournament on Nov.11. The Pirates fell to Chapman 3-1 in the first round of the tournament, bringing theirseason record to 30-4.

“Although we are disappointed with the lost, Chapman played phenomenal defense,”Head Coach Hannah Long said.

Both teams put forth a good effort in the match, according to Student Assistant CoachJulie Bartrip.“We playedour hearts out, and Chapman played their absolute best,” Bartrip said.

The team earned a spot in the tourney after the SCAC in Jackson,Mississippi.

The Pirates placed third in their conference, following Colorado College in firstplace and Trinity University in second.

“Being selected for the NCAA tournament is always a great accomplishment,” Long said.

The team’s high number of wins this season adds to a solid record from the past fewyears.“Over the last four years, we’ve lost a total of 19 games,” Bartrip said.

In order to achieve this level of success, Long says the Pirates invest a lot of time inpreparing for games.

“The team practices four days a week, plays against teammates two days a week, and hasone day off,” Long said.

The time spent together creates a bond between teammates, says one player.

“We love each other and are a family- always,” Elizabeth Sandoval said.

Looking ahead to next season, Long shares some advice for the underclassmen.

“Remember the work it takes to be at that level and keep us on successful path,” CoachLong said.

She also has words of farewell for the team’s seniors.

“Take the lessons you learned from being on team for therest of your life.”

Commenting on the team’s overall performance this year, Bartrip congratulated all players.

“Through wins and losses, we were successful. Thank you for an amazing season,” Bartrip said.

Each year during the holiday season the beginning of Advent is marked by a very important Southwestern tradition: The Candlelight Service.

The service is a presentation of scripture readings accompanied by hymns and special music from our very own University Chorale and Southwestern University Singers. The music is followed by a moment when the room is darkened and candles are lit throughout the chapel.

Dr. Jones and others with the Spiritual and Religious Life office are in charge of making the event happen.

“It’s a worship service, formal, beautiful, much beloved,” Dr. Beverly Jones said.

All of this will occur on-campus at the Lois Perkins Chapel today, Dec. 1. There will be two services in order to accommodate as many people as possible and everyone’s schedules. One service will be at 6 p.m. and the second will be at 8 p.m. Following the 8 p.m. service there will be a holiday reception in the Bishops Lounge.

Students, staff, alumni, friends and family are invited to attend this important Southwestern tradition.
