Are you ready for overpriced parking, seven dollar beer and grassy stage-gazing at Zilker Park? Saddle up, skip out of Friday classes and cruise down to Zilker for ACL this weekend. ATX will be bustling as she hosts her eighth Austin City Limits Music Festival. The sold out event will bring together a fabulous host of performers:
FRIDAY, OCT 2
Kings of Leon / Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Thievery Corporation / John Legend / Them Crooked Vultures / Coheed and Cambria / Andrew Bird / Phoenix / Bassnectar / Medeski, Martin & Wood / Avett Brothers / Reckless Kelly / Raphael Saadiq / Los Amigos Invisibles / The Walkmen / Asleep at the Wheel / Poi Dog Pondering / Dr. Dog / Blitzen Trapper / The Knux / Daniel Johnston / School of Seven Bells / Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 / Todd Snider / Walter “Wolfman” Washington / K’Naan / The Greencards / The Wood Brothers / Sara Watkins / The Parlor Mob / The Low Anthem / Mishka / Leatherbag / Prescott Curlywolf / Jonell Mosser / Sarah Siskind / Nelo / The Gospel Silvertones / Palm School/Barton Hills Choir / Stoosh / Paul Green’s School of Rock All Stars / Telephone Company / Milkshake / Lunch Money
Our Picks: Sure, Kings of Leon is becoming dangerously overplayed on mainstream radio stations these days, but it might come as a shock to some people that this band has been together for ten years. Andrew Bird is made up of two parts folk-y goodness and one part nonsensical lyrics. And he plays the glockenspiel. Need we say more? Also: French alt-rock awesomeness in the form of Phoenix.
SATURDAY, OCT 3
Dave Matthews Band / The Levon Helm Band / Ghostland Observatory / Mos Def / The Decemberists / Flogging Molly / Citizen Cope / STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) / Bon Iver / Mute Math / !!! / … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead / DeVotchka / The Scabs / Grizzly Bear / The Airborne Toxic Event / The Raveonettes / Federico Aubele / The Felice Brothers / Eek-A-Mouse / Henry Butler / John Vanderslice / Zac Brown Band / The Virgins / Alberta Cross / Sam Roberts Band / Bell X1 / Deer Tick / The Henry Clay People / Cotton Jones / Papa Mali / Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights / Mimicking Birds / Sarah Jaffe / The Soul Stirrers / Jeffrey Steele / Damien Horne / River City Christianettes / Quinn Sullivan / The Dexateens / Mr. Leebot / Secret Agent 23 Skidoo / Ralph’s World
Our Picks: Dave Matthews Band’s acoustic jams need no explanation. It would also be a crime against Austin weirdness to not check out ATX-based electro rockers Ghostland Observatory. Also: Mute Math is so much more than just a contributing artist on the “Twilight” soundtrack.
SUNDAY, OCT 4
Pearl Jam / Ben Harper and Relentless7 / The Dead Weather / Toadies / The B-52s / Arctic Monkeys / Clutch / Michael Franti & Spearhead / Girl Talk / Passion Pit / Dirty Projectors / Heartless Bastards / White Lies / Dan Auerbach / Raul Malo / Brett Dennen / The Dodos / Preservation Hall Jazz Band / Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears / State Radio / Here We Go Magic / David Garza / Rodriguez / Rebirth Brass Band / Terri Hendrix / Alela Diane / Mike Posner / Ben Sollee / L.A.X. / Suckers / Matt Morris / Sons of Bill / Jypsi / Danny Brooks / Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band / The Durdens / Vince Mira / Jesse Woods / Q Brothers
Our Picks: Forget about ‘90s grunge and tacky flannel à la Pearl Jam and tune into acclaimed British punkers Arctic Monkeys. Who knew the man behind Girl Talk, a biomedical research engineer, could crank out sweet remixes and mashups? Also: Indulge your inner music snob with indie darling Passion Pit.
Them Crooked Vultures / The Walkmen & Blitzen Trapper with Wye Oak / School of Seven Bells with Phantogram / Devotchka with Los Amigos Invisibles / STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) with Virtual Boy / The Virgins / The Raveonettes with Here we go Magic / !!! with Harlem & Neon Indian / Deer Tick with The Henry Clay People & Alberta Cross / Bassnectar w/ DJ Vadim & Ancient Astronauts / Thievery Corporation w/ Federico Aubele / Danny Brooks (Gospel Brunch) / Rebirth Brass Band / Grizzly Bear with Beach House / The Felice Brothers with Red Cortez / Dan Auerbach with Rodriguez & White Dress / Ghostland Observatory with DJ Dr. Jack / Bon Iver with Megafaun
This preview would not be complete without mention of the 35th anniversary of Austin City Limits on PBS. This season will host hip hop artists for the first time in its history. The televised series lineup also includes Willie Nelson (who first debuted on the show in 1976), Elvis Costello, Andrew Bird and M. Ward (Mmm, Zoey Deschanel? Bring it on), among others. ACL is the longest running televised concert-music program in the United States.
