Community-Engaged Learning

The Inquiry Initiative seeks to connect with the community by incorporating inquiry-based outreach efforts across all Natural Science disciplines.

Current inquiry-based approaches will serve as the template for an outreach program for all Natural Science disciplines, taking advantage of our positive relationships with local principals and teachers. Our science students will work in the Georgetown Independent School District and other venues to present inquiry-based activities and experiments. Southwestern student presenters and elementary-school children will mutually benefit from the inquiry-based activities that Southwestern students will develop. Southwestern’s budding scientists will reinforce their scientific understanding as well as overall communication skills by designing and teaching inquiry-based activities while the elementary-school children will gain an exciting and memorable exposure to science.

Outreach modules will be customized to fit each discipline, with chemistry and physics incorporating their outreach modules into their introductory courses and biology, kinesiology, math & computer science, and animal behavior faculty developing activities for their upper-level classes. This phased implementation within all Natural Science disciplines at varied curricular levels will provide students with an early introduction to the importance of community outreach and continued opportunities for participation throughout their studies.

The Office of Civic Engagement will be an essential resource for faculty and students.

Resources and opportunities will be posted here in the coming future!
