The BIG Event is a day of service each year that gives Southwestern University students, faculty, staff, & alumni the opportunity to spend a day volunteering with local nonprofits and community partners. It is organized by Sustain and sponsored by local businesses.
The BIG Event aims to engage Southwestern students with the Georgetown community that surrounds and supports our university. The intent is three-fold:
- To raise awareness about a variety of social, political, and economic issues in Georgetown
- To strengthen partnerships
- To empower students to engage with their community
While The BIG Event is only a single day, we hope that it will support the development of a more sustained and active relationship between Georgetown and the SU campus.

Over 400 SU volunteers contributed 1,200 service hours to Georgetown in the span of a single day for The BIG Event 2015.
On March 28, 2015, Southwestern students, faculty, staff and alumni came together for The BIG Event, a day dedicated to sustained civic engagement and developing long-standing partnership within our community
