SOUTHWESTERN SECURES TICKET TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH 7-1 WIN (4/14/07)
On Saturday, April 14th, the Bucs played one of its biggest rivals the past couple of years in the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. Whoever was to win this game, would secure the #1 seed in the Div. B playoffs and would also get a bye into the Championship game on Sunday, April 29th at SMU.
The game, the last home game for seniors Ryan Brown, Jason Jones, Travis Nelson, Chris Kaufmann, Ian Daulton and Guillo Machado, started out with both teams out of sync.
The Bucs scored first, followed shortly after by a second goal that was immediately called off on a stick check because of an illegal stick. In a game that was penalty laden, both teams racked up penalty minutes, including over 10 minutes of man-down for SU in the first half alone with 6 of that being for illegal sticks. SU also had the opportunity for 12 man-up opportunities in the game, and again was dismal in its execution.
Somewhere in between, some lacrosse was played on both sides.
The only goal of the day for St.Ed's came on one of the 3 minute non-releasable man-ups they had in the second quarter off a shot that was screened from the goalie.
By the end of the half, SU led 2-1. The third quarter started out much as the first half went, with both teams playing in transition and sloppy, before SU was able to get a couple of goals and really start finding open guys and pushing the pace. The Bucs scored several more times in the 4th to seal the victory as both teams knew they would more than likely see each other again in a couple of weeks. This time, however, would be for the Conference Championship.
Irish, Jones, and Wersonske all played solid games, as did our LSM's, Jake, Guillo, and Fern. Jake got the game ball for scoring his first ever goal after a nifty pick up and quick move to the goal to really get Southwestern going in the third. The defense, which has been stellar all year, again played very well. All our middies had solid games, especially as the game inched closer to being over, with a lot of good things coming out of extensive playing for many players. Titus Hawthorne showed he needs to be on the field more, as did Chase Pipken. All in all, everyone contributed to the win, in preparation for a chance to defend our title at SMU.
We appreciate all the fans for making it out to the games this year, and hope you will join us for the trip to SMU.
The Bucs will have to play much better in two weeks if they want a chance at winning their third consecutive Conference Championship. St. Ed's is a solid team with some great players that never quit.
