BUCS DROP TOUGH ONE TO #2 IN THE NATION 11-2 (3/9/07)
After a stellar win the night before against Augustana, the Bucs woke up knowing they were going to play one of the best teams in the nation, in St. John's that evening.
What they didn't know is whether or not they would be two men down on starting attack or if Jones would be able to make it back from his ankle sprain. The answer came quick. Jones could barely walk, much less run or cut or move.
So the Bucs went into the game without its two best ball handlers and leading scorers and having to put a number of people back at attack with little or no experience against an All-American defense.
St. john's was fluid in passing, and controlled transition and clears. When the Bucs were able to get the ball on offense, we were notÊable ot run ourÊoffenseÊwithout Jones. There was simply too much inconsistency with the guys playingÊdown at attack to control the ball.
St. John's jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and took a 7-1 lead into half. By the end of the third, both teams were finished scoring as St. John's cruised to an 11-2 win.
The close defense of the Bucs again did a very good job of controlling the attack of St. Johns. But St. John's, with all their experience and depthÊwas very good and extremely precise at controlling ground balls and capitalizing on them in unsettled situations. This left McDonough with no chanceÊon many pointÊblank shots against very good shooters.
All the lines played hard and never quit, with line 4 getting some solid time and showing they deserved more time on the field.
While one could only hope what might have been a closer game if Jones, or both Jones and Webb would have been in, the Johnnies were the superior team and showed it in every facet of the game.
We appreciate the opportunity to play St. John's and know that it will only make us better as we go through the rest of the season.
After the game,Êseveral of the members on the team stayed to watch Augustana play Carnegie Mellon, the Bucs final opponent on the trip the next day. What they saw was a team thatÊbeat Augustana handily.Ê
The Bucs did enjoy the Augustana fans, however, with their often colorful and interesting take on happenings in the game.
The Bucs knew they had to win againstÊCarnegie Mellon to make this trip a success. The question was two fold. Did they have enough gas left in the tank, and how could they do that with most of their productive offense, which everything was set for, was on the sidelines.
