SOUTHWESTERN WINS FIRST CONFERENCE GAME OF YEAR (2/10/07)

On Saturday, February 10th, the Bucs got up early (a little early by some accounts) and made the trek to Fort Worth to play TCU, a Div. A team playing in Division B for the third straight year. The past couple of years Southwestern has played the Horned Frogs at home and has handled them easily.

That alone was a very scary thought in retrospect. The Bucs severely underestimated the talent and the numbers they had on their team, based on the scores from early in the season.

In short, the Bucs were not mentally prepared and the Horned Frogs came out with something to prove. TCU played a zone for the ENTIRE game. When that was coupled with the slow start by the Bucs, unable to throw and catch in the first half, a recipe for a very tough game was starting to bake.

Fortunately the Bucs defense was a stalwart the entire game and was able to keep TCU in check. The Bucs needed it, becoming more and more frustrated as each second ticked off.

The Bucs and the Horned Frogs were notched at 0-0 after one with one of the sloppiest quarters in recent memory on offense and in transition. Finally in the second, Webb broke the game open ; ) with a rebound shot to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead which lasted through halftime and halfway through the third before Thompson placed a rocket shot past the goalie.

Shortly after, however, a rebound was placed in the SU goal, followed shortly by a goal by a defensemen going the length of the field for TCU to tie the game up at 2 apiece.

In the fourth Jones put us back up with a rocket shot, followed by another goal by Webb to give the Bucs a final margin of 4-2 with a little over 7 minutes left. It was all the Bucs and their defense needed.

While it wasn't pretty, it was a win. The Bucs realized they have some work to do as they head into next weekend's double header against UTSA and Baylor. Both teams have historically given the Bucs fits and our work is cut out for us.

Cole, Jake and the entire defense played a solid game and kept us in a position to win the game throughout.

Credit must be given to the players and coaches at TCU. Several of their players played extremely well, including their goalie. Although he won't be eligible for post-season awards, he was a difference maker and stopped numerous shots the Bucs made to keep the game close throughout. They have made leaps and bounds and the guys are playing with spirit and enjoying the game. You can see that on the field. We wish them the best of luck the rest of the season.

We would like to thank all the fans that made it out to see the game. Jeffcoat, Brent "Pasty" Wilson, and Dave Winter, along with some other alums, students, and the Webbs all made the trip to support us. We appreciate the support.

- Bill Bowman
