SOUTHWESTERN OPENS '07 CAMPAIGN WITH RARE HOME LOSS (1/28/07)
The Bucs, fresh off their best season ever, opened up 2007 with a disappointing loss to the Texas State Bobcats.
The past few years, the Bucs have been very close to beating the very talented Bobcats, but somehow each time have found a way to lose.
Unfortunately, this year was no different. The Bucs came out on fire. On the first face of of the season, Daulton got the face-off and raced down the field to find an open Webb on a fast break for a lead less than 6 seconds into the game. We hope that is a premonition of things to come for our tough season, schedule wise.
The Bucs took a 2 goal lead before Texas State was able to notch its first goal of the day. It was the only two goal lead either team would have until the very end of the game.
The Bucs played very well, despite losing a starting defenseman to a concussion in the first quarter as well as a starting middie. Both teams were a little rusty for the first game of the year, as evidenced by a couple of two man down situations by both teams, and general chaos on the defensive side.
By halftime, both teams were notched at 5. The third quarter, the time when the Bobcats really took over the past couple of years, belonged to the Bucs this year, finding a 9-8 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
For most of the quarter, both teams traded goals, with one team going up by one, and the other tying shortly after. Twice, the Bucs had momentum on their side scoring a big goal and getting a chance to take the lead, but could not find the back of the net. Finally with just under 5 minutes left in the game, the Bobcats found the back of the net to go up for the final time. After a failed chance on the offensive side, the Bobcats scored again with 3 and a half minutes remaining to ice the game.Ê
SU lost the ensuing face-off and a goal was scored as the Bucs tried to pressure the ball with about a minute left in the game.
Credit must be given to the Bobcats as they were able to get a lead at the end and close the game out. In a game that could have gone either way, they were able to finish.
While a tough loss, the Bucs are very encouraged about their play and the performances of several players. Jake played one of his best games in uniform, playing well enough for us to win, and Webb, was unbelievable. No one could stop him with 7(g) 1(a) on the day.
The Bucs were able to move the ball and find many open shots, but were plagued the entire day by numerous dropped passes and missed opportunities.
Cole at defense was solid as were Brown, Thompson, Irish and Daulton at middie.
With two weeks before we open conference play, the Bucs have several things to work on.ÊÊFundamentals and continuing to establish the team chemistry will be at the top of the list.
With upcoming games against TCU in Fort Worth and games against UT-SA and a solid Baylor team the following weekend, our work is cut out for us.
Thanks to all the fans that came out and the donor that provided us with the new banner that proudly shows all our past accomplishments.
