SU FALLS TO NATIONALLY RANKED SMS (3/23/04)
Playing at home under the lights for the first time since 2001
when SU hosted an up and coming Oakland University (MI), SU came
back fresh from Spring Break and a six game win streak, to play
one of the biggest conversation teams in Div. B, SMS.
SMS, a second year team in the GRLC, and certainly to go to the
upper division in that conference next year, had already shown
their prowess against to of the better Div.A teams, with two solid
wins against UNT and SMU. The game against the Bucs was no
difference, with few shots all night, and the only three goals in
a 15-3 loss coming from each of the attack. SMS is simply a
better team.
SU knew it had a tough road to hoe. It matched the intensity of
SMS, but simply was not able to provide any offensive threats the
entire night, playing most of the game on its defensive side or in
the middle of the field fighting for ground balls that SMS was
exceptional at picking up. While SU was able to actually beat
most of the face-off men for SMS, during the ensuing scramble to
gain possession, SU lost the battle almost every time.
SMS had a stifling defense, exceptional long stick middies, and a
poised offense that waited for you to make mistakes defensively.
Couple that with the fact that our defense refused to fight
through picks, but rather ran around them, leaving shooters open
for shots, it was a long night.
The young team realized what the next level is, while playing
SMS. There may be teams that can beat SMS in Div. B nationally,
but not many. They are definitely a top 5 team in the nation, and
the new poll that comes out should reflect that.
We appreciate SMS and Coach Turner for making the huge road trip
to Texas to play SU and the other LSA teams. Good luck in the GRLC
this season. We also appreciate the nice crowd we had at the game
on a week night. Great support SU fans!!! Playing under the
lights is fun.
SU will try to get back on the winning track this weekend against
another GRLC powerhouse, and nationally ranked team in Harding at
UTA. We follow that up with a game on Sunday against AC to secure
a spot in the playoffs.
