Southwestern vs. Louisiana State UniversityShreveport (2/26/00)
With only 13 guys traveling for the game, Southwestern got up at 3:30 in the
morning (many claimed they never went to bed) and drove the 7 hours to
Shreveport in the rain to play first year team LSU/Shreveport on Saturday.
The game started with an exclamation point by the team as Zach Beaty
received a pass from Finley in front of the goal and put the shot in with
only 30 seconds gone in the game. Southwestern never looked back, holding
LSU/S scoreless until the 3rd quarter, and winning with a final score of
20-4.
Southwestern unveiled its "Jumbo Offense" against LSU/Shreveport and it was
devastating. Both Matt Finley and Mark Jurica kept the defense busy the
entire day. LSU/Shreveport was not helped by the ejection of their goalie
before the first quarter ended. This was the second of the year for him.
Everyone played extremely well. Several people made it into the scoring
page, including first timer Mike Kacher and sentimental favorite, Senior
Matt Hurtado, a starting D-man his entire career. Because of the small
number of players available to the team for the game, Matt took a quick 5
minute course on how to play the position, and was able to score two goals
on the day. The defense again was extremely tough, including first year,
Matt Garcia, who stepped in and played very well at long stick Defense for
half of the game because of an injury to one of our players. While Hurtado
was playing offense, the entire Defense was made up of freshmen, two first
year players, and anchored by Austin High grad, Ben Thompson.
Seven of our thirteen players scored during the game, including our usual
cast, and everyone enjoyed a nice dinner at a great Cajun food restaurant
after the game before the trip to Nacogdoches to play SFA.
