Southwestern vs. St. Edwards (2/19/00)
Southwestern gets first win against St. Edward's.
Southwestern got its first win of the season in front of a big crowd on
Saturday against division rival and newcomer to the league, St Edward's
University. The win, a final score of 9-2, moved Southwestern into a 1-1
record in the Southern Division of the SWLA for the season.
Southwestern scrimmaged St. Ed's in the fall and was impressed with the
marked improvement their team showed in such a short time. All of our
players stepped up, many playing in front of their parents, to pull away
from St. Ed's in the second half. Several players scored goals for the
team. Mark Jurica, stepped in at crease attack to play for the missing Matt
Finley at a conference Swim meet. Mark played very well, scoring two goals
and receiving the game ball from the team. Andrew Magnuson also scored two
goals, including the first of the game, and a scorcher in the fourth.
First-year, Matt Siekielski, who has admirably stepped in at attack this year
despite never having played the game before the fall, also followed with two
goals and had many other opportunities. The team had a fun discussion with
him after the game to explain that if he has an open shot on the goal with
no one around him, he does not have to bounce the shot into the net. He
found this out the hard way as an open goal shot bounced high over the net.
Once again, the defense played very strong, not allowing St. Ed's to get
into any rhythm. They allowed only a handful of quality shots the entire
game. Every player received considerable playing time, and served as
another opportunity for our young and inexperienced team to gain confidence
in their team. Thanks to all of the parents for supporting the team. We
also appreciate all the year long supporters.
