Traci Giuliano named holder of one of six endowed positions funded at Southwestern by The Brown Foundation Inc.

Traci Giuliano, professor of psychology, has been named holder of the John H. Duncan Chair at Southwestern University.

The John H. Duncan Chair is one of six endowed positions funded at Southwestern by The Brown Foundation Inc. of Houston. It was previously held by Psychology Professor Jesse Purdy. Giuliano will hold the position for five years.

Holders of the Brown Chairs receive additional funds and time to conduct their scholarly research. They also are responsible for hosting Southwestern’s annual Brown Symposium on a topic of general interest to the university and the community.

Giuliano holds a B.A. in psychology from The University of Texas and an M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has been a member of the Southwestern faculty since 1994.

Having grown up as a tomboy playing sports on all-boys’ teams, Giuliano is fascinated by the role that gender plays in influencing not only our own perceptions and behavior, but also others’ perceptions of and behavior toward us. Her research explores the effects of gender in a variety of applied contexts, including sports, health, communication and sexuality. Giuliano has published 23 articles in peer-reviewed journals with 32 undergraduate student co-authors. Mentoring students through research is Giuliano’s passion, and she is proud that her students have served as lead author on 13 articles and that 10 of her students have earned national paper competition awards.

Giuliano regularly teaches courses in Research Methods, Social Psychology, and Human Sexuality. She also serves as one of Southwestern’s Paideia Professors, and teaches a popular First Year Seminar course titled “Why People Believe in Weird Things.” She received Southwestern’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999, and the Methodist Board of Higher Education in Ministry’s Outstanding Teaching Award in 2004.

“Traci Giuliano is an excellent example of the best that Southwestern has to offer in its faculty,” said Provost Jim Hunt. “She is an outstanding teacher/scholar and university citizen and has deep commitment to working with her students − both in and out of the classroom. We look forward to her time as a Brown Chair and her work in the development of a future Brown Symposium.”
