Dr. David Sowell of Juniata College will deliver this year’s History Colloquium talk, “Riots, Schools and Clinics: Writing the History of Medicine in Latin America,” on Tuesday 11/19 at 4:00 pm in Olin 110.
Using examples from Bogotá, Colombia, and Yucatán Mexico, this lecture in the history of Latin American medicine will illustrate the powerful relationship between scientific medicine and modern state structures. The introduction of scientific medicine in Latin America in the nineteenth century caused considerable discomfort, challenging the deeply held belief in the connection between the Catholic faith and healing. By the time of the Depression, scientific medicine had been granted exclusive healing authority by Latin American states.
Please join the History department, International Studies, Latin American Studies, and the Global Health Paideia Cluster in welcoming Dr. Sowell to our campus!
