Upward Bound (UB) is a multi-year, federally funded program designed for high school students who have the potential to succeed in college and could benefit from academic support and precollege information. The goal of UB is to provide the information, assistance and guidance required for all UB scholars to be admitted to and to graduate from college. UB serves a total of 50 students from Georgetown, East View, Granger, and Jarrell High Schools. Students must apply and meet federal criteria for admission to the UB program.
Instructors are critical to the academic success of UB scholars. Instructors must be able to use engaging strategies to teach core academic concepts, create a stimulating learning atmosphere, and communicate clearly in oral and written form. Instructors must have a desire to assist high school students to succeed.
The PSAT/SAT Prep course is a component in our academic enrichment classes which will be offered every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. from September through May on the Southwestern University campus. This is a part-time position that reports Director of Upward Bound.
Primary Duties: Develop PSAT/SAT prep curriculum in cooperation with other UB instructors and provide a class syllabus prior to the start of the program; prepare and teach an engaging lesson/presentation each class period and supervise scholars during designated times; maintain a student profile for each scholar on roster and participate in assessment of scholar needs to determine class placement/offerings; grade scholars’ work within a five-day period and provide academic feedback on progress reports and attend pre-semester planning sessions and UB instructor meetings.
Qualifications: Successful candidates will meet the following requirements: minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related academic area; possess a valid teaching certificate or experience teaching PSAT/SAT prep courses in a secondary or college/university setting; at least one year of teaching in an educational setting; a desire to work with high school students and must be in good standing with current employing district.
