Candlelight Services are a popular tradition on campus. Alumni also organize Candlelight Services in cities across Texas.

Alumni associations also offering four other services across the state

Southwestern University will offer Candlelight Services for the Season of Advent on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 6 and 8 p.m. in the Lois Perkins Chapel. The services are free and open to the public. Seating for the 8 p.m. service will be available at 7:30 p.m.

The services, which are a Southwestern and Georgetown tradition, are adapted from “An Advent Service of Lessons and Carols” in The United Methodist Church Book of Worship, and are based on one developed in 1934 for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. The highlight of each service comes when the sanctuary is completely darkened and candles are lit throughout.

Liturgists for the services will be Southwestern University Chaplain Beverly Jones and Bishop in Residence Joe Wilson. The prelude will be performed by a string quartet that includes students Erin Weber, Marie Smith, Jeffrey McKenzie and Will Danheim. Additional music will be provided by the SU Chorale under the direction of Kenny Sheppard.

Southwestern’s dining service provider, Sodexo, will be offering dinner to the public from 5-8 p.m. in the Commons at a cost of $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Following the 8 p.m. service, there will be a hot chocolate reception in the Bishops Lounge sponsored by Southwestern and the Greater Georgetown Association of Southwestern University Alumni. Both the Commons and the Bishops Lounge are located on the first floor of the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center.

Several other Southwestern University alumni groups also have organized Candlelight Services in their areas. The San Antonio Association of Southwestern University Alumni is planning a service on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, 825 East Basse Rd.
