In These Shoes? I Don’t Think So. The Paradox of Human Bipedality.
Running is difficult and painful but paradoxically, may be the reason humans became bipedal. While running may be a defining characteristic of humans, our ability to move using our legs seems to have become impaired. We choose to ornament our feet in shoes that don’t help us run and then shun activities that require using our feet. It is still possible for humans to run well. This session will examine this question – from evolutionary, psychosocial, physiological, and anthropological perspectives.
Scott McLean, Associate Professor of Kinesiology
F.W. Olin, Room 110
