Southwestern is funding proposals from 31 of its faculty members that will enable them to conduct or present their research in 2012-2013. The total amounted awarded for faculty development is $92,767.

  • Shana Bernstein, associate professor of history, received $2,779 to support her research on environmental justice campaigns in early to mid-20th century Chicago.
  • Melissa Byrnes, assistant professor of history, received $2,153 to complete research for her book on the integration of North African migrants in France in the three decades following World War II.
  • Eileen Cleere, professor of English, received $2,153 to present a paper at the annual conference of the North American Victorian Studies Association in September 2012.
  • Sergio Costola, associate professor of theatre, received $2,503 to work on a book based on lectures given by former UCLA Theatre Professor Leon Katz.
  • Elaine Craddock, professor of religion, received $3,777 to conduct research at Tamil temples in South India.
  • Abigail Dings, assistant professor of Spanish, received $1,480 to give a presentation at the 2012 conference of the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages in November 2012.
  • Alisa Gaunder, associate professor of political science, received $1,775 to continue her research on obstacles faced by female politicians in Germany and Japan.
  • Fay Guarraci, associate professor of psychology, received $2,153 to study the effects of age and hormone treatment on the primate hypothalamus.  
  • Melissa Johnson, professor of anthropology, received $1,825 to present a paper at the 2012 conference of the Caribbean Studies Association.
  • Alison Kafer, associate professor of feminist studies, received $2,853 to co-edit a special issue of Disability Studies Quarterly.
  • Michael Kamen, associate professor of education, received $1,842 to present a paper at the 2013 meeting of the International Consortium for Research in Science and Mathematics Education.
  • Shawna Loberg, assistant athletic trainer, received $1,460 to attend a seminar on new techniques for treating upper extremity injuries.
  • Maria Lowe, professor of sociology, received $4,838 for a study of how the introduction of a football team affects the campus climate at a liberal arts college.
  • Shannon Mariotti, assistant professor of political science, received $3,553 to support her research on the relevance of Theodor Adorno’s thoughts on democracy in America.
  • Francis Mathieu, assistant professor of French, received $4,000 to fund publication of his forthcoming book on early modern French novelists. 
  • Thom McClendon, professor of history, received $6,428 to support work on the book he is compiling titled The South Africa Reader: History, Culture, Politics.
  • Scott McLean, associate professor of kinesiology, received $4,273 to support his research on competitive backstroke starts.
  • Kenneth Mello, assistant professor of religion, and Dustin Tahmahkera, assistant professor of communication studies, received funds to attend the annual conference of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association in June 2012. Tahmahkera also received funds to support his work on a book about Indian country music.
  • Allison Miller, assistant professor of art history, received $8,465 to support her research on the imperial tombs at modern-day Xi’an, China.
  • Athletic trainer Abigail Petrecca received funds to attend an athletic training seminar in June 2012.
  • Aaron Prevots, associate professor of French, received $2,403 to support his work on a book about French writer Jacques Reda.
  • Carl Robertson, associate professor of Chinese, received $2,045 to support his research comparing literary voice in Tibet and China.
  • Katy Ross, associate professor of Spanish, received $1,320 to present a paper at the June 2012 meeting of the Asociation Hispanica de Humanidades.
  • Pam Rossman, instructor of music, and Kenny Sheppard, professor of music, received $3,495 to travel to Italy with the SU Chorale in March 2013.
  • Eileen Meyer Russell, associate professor of music, received $4,000 to support teaching and performances in Jamaica in June 2012 and to commission new compositions for low brass and other instruments.
  • Michael Saenger, associate professor of English, received $4,000 to support the publication of his new book of essays about the languages and cultures in the works of William Shakespeare.
  • Max Taub, associate professor of biology, received $2,153 to write a chapter about the effects of elevated carbon dioxide levels on plants.  
  • Davi Thornton, assistant professor of communication studies, received $2,153 to continue her research on James Meredith’s 1966-1967 March Across Mississippi.
