Nearly 80 high school students from across Texas will be coming to Southwestern July 10-24 for an intensive two-week theatre-training program known as the Tal Lostracco Summer Theatre Camp.

Students will take classes in the morning from Southwestern theatre professors and high school drama teachers, and spend the afternoons and evenings rehearsing five different plays. The camp will culminate in a July 23 “Festival of Performances” that is open to the public.

The plays to be performed this year are “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” be Bertolt Brecht, “The Tragedy of Tragedies” by Henry Fielding, “Marisol” by Juan Diego Rivera and “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes.

The plays will be performed in the Jones Theater from 1-6 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 is requested for those attending the plays.

The camp was started in the summer of 2001 by Tal Lostracco, a 1981 Southwestern graduate and long-time high school drama teacher. It was previously held at Lon Morris College and Trinity Valley Community College. This is the second year it has been held at Southwestern. Twenty-four high school drama teachers from all over the state are coming to assist with the camp. The camp is directed by John Ore, associate professor of theatre at Southwestern.
