Southwestern University’s 5th annual Large Act Concert will feature Grammy Award-winning rapper Common on Friday, Feb. 26th, in the Corbin J. Robertson Center (Building #17 on the campus map). The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for Southwestern students and $15 for Southwestern faculty and staff.  Tickets for the general public are $20 and will be available beginning Friday, Feb. 12.     There are several options for purchasing tickets:

1.      Tickets can be purchased online using a credit card at www.southwestern.edu/studentactivities/concert

2.      Tickets can be purchased in person at the Southwestern University Student Activities Office on the third floor of the McCombs Campus Center (Building #30).

3.      Tickets can also be purchased at the door, if available.

Chicago-born rapper Common was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album (Universal Mind Control) and Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group (Make Her Say – Kid Cudi, Kanye West and Common). Common won an award for Lyricist of the Year in 2007 at the BET Hip Hop Awards and has been nominated for numerous other Grammy Awards.

Common is the founder of the Common Ground Foundation, which is committed to the empowerment and development of urban youth in the United States. The Common Ground Foundation utilizes the influence of hip hop to serve as an advocate of justice, education, the fight against poverty, and the need for health awareness among underserved communities.

In addition to his activism, Common is in the process of filming two movies: Just Wright, which has him starring alongside Queen Latifa, and Date Night, which features notable actors such as Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Ruffalo, Leighton Meester, James Franco and Mark Wahlburg.

Common is also preparing a new album, The Believer, which is expected to be released in early summer. On this album, Common has enlisted the assistance of Kanye West, No I. D. and Twilite Tone.

Common will perform during the Student Peace Alliance 2010 National Conference, which is being held at Southwestern University Feb. 26-28. The Student Peace Alliance is a national organization mobilizing youth to create and sustain peace. This conference will bring together 500 students from across the nation and will focus on presenting initiatives that reduce and prevent violence at a domestic and international level that will help build sustainable peace. The annual Large Act Concert is made possible by Southwestern University and the University Programming Council. Previous Large Act Concerts at Southwestern have featured Wyclef Jean, Cake, The Decemberists and New Found Glory.
