On Friday, Aug. 24, Southwestern University welcomed to campus the 403 members of the fall 2015 entering class. As the University continues celebrating its rich history as Texas’ first university, the addition of the newest students is cause for celebration. The incoming class brings Southwestern’s total student body to 1,524 — significantly more than the 33 original Southwestern students, but still a small, close-knit community.

Fifteen percent of the 367 first year students and 36 transfers are not only moving to Georgetown, but to the state of Texas; and eight students are from outside the U.S., including Stan Kannegieter, a member of the Southwestern basketball team from The Netherlands.

The class is composed of 56 percent women and 44 percent men, with 68 percent of the incoming class placing in the top quarter of their high school graduating class. The incoming Pirates also represent the highest percentage (42) of underrepresented groups, making Southwestern one of the most diverse liberal arts college campuses in the state.

For the third year, the Southwestern football players and other student athletes did some of the heavy lifting for the new students alongside faculty and staff who welcomed families to the community. As he has every year, President Edward Burger rolled up his sleeves to help as well. First year Madison Granier expressed her enthusiasm on Twitter, saying “You know you’re going to love your school when the president of the university helps you move in.”
