Southwestern students will have the opportunity to study Roman art and literature while within minutes away from Pompeii.

The Bay of Naples area was a Greek enclave in Roman Italy, and was the major cauldron of creation of Roman art through Greek influence.

Prof. Howe’s 71-444 Hellenistic Art covers the creation of Roman art by the adaptation of Greek and will visit the sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum  and the Villas of Stabiae, where Howe is general archaeological director and master planner.

The Haskells’ course 14-304 Classical Literature in Context will read ancient texts (in Latin, or translation, as you wish), in direct connection with the sites they refer to, such as the villa of Pollio Felix further out on the Sorrento coast.
Both courses will visit the local sites, the great archaeological museum of Naples and spend a weekend in Rome, visiting the Forum, the Golden House of Nero and the Vatican museums. Both are 4-credit Southwestern University courses; they will run concurrently, and students may only take one.

The program includes full accommodation at the secure facility Vesuvian Institute of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation, with full Italian kitchen and views of the Bay of Naples, and local transportation. The professors are saving students between $1000 and $1500 by using the Vesuvian Institute as the service provider. Program cost for either course is $4000 if over 20 sign up, $4825 if 10-19 sign up. Air transportation not included. Application deadline: Feb. 1, 2015.

Dates: Sunday, May 24-Saturday, June 13, 2015.
