Southwestern University’s Opera Theatre presents Mark Adamo’s operatic adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women.”
A coming-of-age tale of four sisters growing up during the turbulent American Civil War period.
The Southwestern University’s Opera Theatre is directed by Bruce Cain and composed of music majors and non-majors. The students learn basic stage movement and acting techniques for the lyric theatre, culminating in public performance.
This production will have two guest artists; Austin Bradley, baritone and Katherine Wiggins ’08, mezzo-soprano
Praised for his “bigger than life” performances, American baritone, Austin Bradley enjoys a budding career on the operatic and concert stage. Austin’s recent stage credits include: Schaunard (La Bohéme), Dancaïro (Carmen), Tarquinius (The Rape of Lucretia), and the title role in Don Giovanni. At the Butler Opera Center he premiered the role of Teddy in the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s A Woman in Morocco. Last year, Austin made his professional debut in Tosca with Austin Opera. As an advocate for art song and recitals, Austin was a young artist at SongFest in 2011 and a participant at the Baldwin Wallace Art Song Festival in 2012. As a recitalist, he was recently featured on McLennan Community College’s Steinway Recital Series in 2012 and with the inaugural Austin Saengerrunde recital in Austin, TX. Upcoming performances include chorus in Opera Piccola of San Antonio’s new production of Dido and Aeneas and Guglielmo in Cosí fan tutte with Spotlight Concerts. Austin completed training at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the University of Texas at Austin.
Mezzo-soprano Katherine Wiggins is thrilled to be returning to her alma mater as a Guest Artist. Ms. Wiggins has sung professionally throughout the U.S. and has been lauded by the Miami Herald as “fiery” and “vocally and dramatically outstanding.” Lawrence Budmen of the South Florida Classical Review wrote: “As the amorous page Cherubino, Katherine Wiggins brought a richly colored mezzo and deft comic timing, her antics stealing the scene at every turn.” Ms. Wiggins’ 2014/15 season highlights include the world premiere of Franklin Piland’s Rose Made Man (Cohen New Works Festival), and Eliza Smith in The Zoo (Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin). Ms. Wiggins has performed as a soloist with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Bergonzi String Quartet, the Choral Society of the Palm Beaches, Plymouth Chancel Choir, Frost Opera Theatre, the Miami Bach Society, the Tropical Baroque Festival, and the Virginia Arts Festival, among others. Operatic roles include Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia), Elizabeth Proctor (The Crucible), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Nancy (Albert Herring), La Suora Zelatrice (Suor Angelica), La Suora Infermiera (Suor Angelica), Prince Orlovsky (Die Fledermaus), Fleta (Iolanthe), Television Interviewer (world premiere of Charles Mason’s Entanglements), and Justine (Libby Larsen’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus).
