Guest Recital: Austin Civic Orchestra
7:30pm - 8:30pm CST February 7
This year’s concert, “The Russians are Coming” will include Aram Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance and Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile for Violoncello and String Orchestra with guest artist cellist Hai Zheng. The second half of the concert features Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5.
There will be a free pre-concert talk in the Caldwell-Carvey Foyer at 6:30pm by Dr. Bob Horick and Dr. Ellsworth Peterson. Dr. Horick will discuss the socio/political aspects of the history of music in the USSR and of Shostakovich’s music in particular, leading up to the premiere of the 5th symphony. Dr. Peterson will call attention to some of the musical characteristics of the work and how they reflect the political climate of the time.
