Phoebe Copeland of Wharton, TX, is Southwestern’s first Greek major. While other students have pursued majors in Classics and in Latin, Ms. Copeland is the first to attempt SU’s brand new Greek major. Ms. Copeland had no experience with Classics before enrolling at Southwestern. She plans to use Classics degree to pursue graduate school study in linguistics.

To deepen her exposure to the Greek world, Ms. Copeland studied at College Year in Athens (CYA) during the spring ‘09 semester. CYA awarded her a scholarship, a testament to Ms. Copeland’s academic strength.

Incorporated in 1962, CYA is the most well-respected and rigorous American institution in Athens for students interested in the Classics. It attracts a world-class faculty, and courses combine rigorous classroom work and research with fieldtrips to areas such as Crete to the south and Macedonia to the north.

Phoebe is the younger sister of Ansa (‘07).

Class of 2008 graduate Aine McVey attended CYA in 2006. For her story, please click here.
