Academics

Our Educational Philosophy

Southwestern has one of the nation's more traditional liberal arts and sciences programs, with contemporary components designed to prepare today's student for the modern world. Emerging as part of Southwestern's educational experience is the new Paideia Program – a distinctive academic option for select students that provides opportunities to compare, contrast and integrate knowledge and skills gained in various areas of study.

Students discover the powerful connections between the University's rigorous academic experience and dynamic programs available outside the classroom through leadership, collaborative learning, service and intercultural experiences.

All students at Southwestern have the opportunity to

Gain a macro-view of the world. Southwestern's emphasis is on understanding the global community through requirements in its General Education Program, and such extracurricular activities as Global Issues Forum, Brown Symposium and other lectures and events.

Learn in an enriched classroom. Southwestern is committed to experiential and active learning in and out of the classroom. With small class sizes, professors get to know their students, use non-traditional learning resources, bring outside experts on topics to class, and challenge students to get involved.

Achieve a sense of balance. Southwestern recognizes the importance of developing the full person in each student. Students seek balance by taking their academic work seriously, becoming heavily involved in student organizations and intramural sports, enjoying an active social life, exploring Austin, and attending the many scholarly lectures and fine arts events offered on campus.

Become a member of a community and realize its educational advantages. The Southwestern community is supportive and all-involving. Students find Southwestern an easy place to make friends among students and faculty, thus gaining personal and intellectual confidence. A friendly, caring place, Southwestern's size and atmosphere contribute to a student's ability to take risks that, perhaps, he or she wouldn't take at larger schools.

Experience the unique impact of Southwestern. Because of its high-quality academic program, its size, and its strong faculty commitment to teaching, among other reasons, Southwestern offers a variety of attributes all together in one place. The academic program pushes students to new levels of understanding.
