The faculty of Southwestern are undoubtedly our most valuable resource.
As persons of learning, our faculty stand among the best in their profession (ninety-nine percent of tenured or tenure-track faculty hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their respective fields). As educators, Southwestern faculty excel at teaching in an intimate and engaged environment (our current student-to-faculty ratio is 10:1, with an average class size of 14 students). And as citizens of our community, Southwestern faculty bring a collaborative and personal approach to their work: our classes are taught by professors, not teaching assistants, and collaborative research and publication with students is common.
First Thursdays
Join us this Thursday, September 3, at 4:00 pm in the Merzbach Room for the first "First Thursday" of the 2009-2010 academic year. These gatherings are a time for us to learn about the recent professional achievement of our colleagues. This Thursday we will hear from Ken Roberts (Economics), Maria Todd (Biology), Eileen Russell (Music), Elisabeth Piedmont-Martin (English), Michael Cooper (Music), Sandra Loudwig (Chemistry and Biochemistry).
Refreshments are provided by the Provost's office.
If you have a publication, performance, or other achievement and are interested in presenting at the October or November gathering, please contact Laura Hobgood-Oster, professor of religion.
